He is full professor of Archaeology at the ‘Aldo Moro’ University of Bari.

PhD in Archaeology and PhD in History, he taught Archaeology at the University of Foggia, where he was President of the Degree Course in Cultural Heritage and Director of the Department of Human Sciences, coordinator of the PhD in Archaeology and didactics of Cultural Heritage, the PhD course in History and Global Archaeology of Landscapes, the 1st Level Master in Landscape Archaeology and the Summer Schools of Archaeology.

From 2008 to 2013 he was Rector of the University of Foggia. In the CRUI-Conference of Rectors of Italian Universities he was coordinator of the Library Commission.

Since 2017 he has been a member of the Board of Professors of the SAIA – Italian Archaeological School of Athens, where he teaches Late Antique Archeology.

Since 2017 he has been a member of the Consiglio di Amministrazione of the University of Siena.

He directs the magazine L’archeologo subacqueo.Quadrimestrale di archeologia subacquea e navaleand the archeology series Insulae Diomedeae(Universities of Foggia and Bari); Bibliotheca Archaeologica; Adrias; Aufidus; Le vie maestre (Edipuglia).

He is a member of the editorial board and the scientific committee of numerous national and international journals and series. He has directed numerous national and international research projects. He is a member of numerous historical and archaeological scientific societies and is a corresponding member of the Istituto Archeologico Germanico.

From 2012 to 2018 he was President of SAMI – Società degli Archeologi Medievalisti Italiani.

He has been a member since 2012 and from 2014 to 2018 he was President of the National Council ‘Cultural and Landscape Heritage’ of MiBACT.

Since 2018 he has been President of the Consulta Universitaria per le Archeologie Postclassiche and since 2019 he has been President of the Federazione delle Consulte Universitarie di Archeologia.

Since 2019 he is Membre du Conseil Scientifique de Institut des Sciences Humaines et Sociales, CNRS, Paris.

He has directed numerous excavations and archaeological researches on land and underwater in Italy and abroad.

He coordinated the Carta dei Beni culturali of Puglia Region and worked on the Regional Landscape Plan of the Puglia Region.

He has received prestigious prizes and awards and has published over 600 contributions, including numerous monographs, including, in the field of cultural heritage policy, Patrimonio al futuro(Electa 2015),Un patrimonio italiano (Utet 2016), Il bene nostro. Un impegno per il patrimonio culturale(Edipuglia 2019), Archeologia pubblica(Carocci 2020). He is considered one of the leading cultural heritage policy experts in Italy.
